Amnesty International: Crimes Against Humanity Loom Large Over Ebrahim Raisi’s Inauguration

On August 4, 2021, in a thread of Twitter messages, Amnesty International protested the presence of an EU representative at the inauguration of President Ebrahim Raisi.

The message reads:

Crimes against humanity loom large over Ebrahim Raisi’s inauguration as president of Iran. We continue to call for him to be criminally investigated for his role in past and ongoing crimes against humanity related to the 1988 Massacre.

The international community, including the EU, which is sending Enrique Mora to Raisi’s inauguration, must publicly demonstrate its commitment to fight against systematic impunity in Iran for extrajudicial executions and other unlawful killings, enforced disappearances and torture.

On June 19, a day after the sham election that brought Raisi to power, Amnesty lamented that he had been elevated to Iran’s second-highest political office instead of being investigated and put on trial for his role in those same crimes.

Also, Agnes Callamard Secretary General, Amnesty said in a message:
On the inauguration day of Iran President Raisi lets remember the 1000s victims of the 1988 repression, disappeared and extra judicially executed and recall President Raisi role.

The impunity of Mullahs’ regime and mass murderer Ebrahim Raisi must be challenged, at long last, by the international community. This can be accomplished, by launching a formal Commission of Inquiry at the United Nations and pursuing information about the 1988 massacre with the expressed goal of filing charges against known perpetrators at the International Criminal Court.

The international community should no longer pursue the policy of appeasing the mullahs for the sake of petty commercial interests. It is time for the world to stand with the Iranian people and the history of their relentless struggle for freedom, justice and human rights.

As Mrs. Maryam Rajavi the president-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) said: The Iranian people have had the last word by boycotting the regime’s election charade. And now they are declaring that mullah Raisi must be held accountable and prosecuted for his crimes against humanity.
