The reports below highlight the alarming human rights abuses perpetrated by the Iranian regime against political prisoners in its prisons. The first report details the regime’s efforts to execute political prisoners in Evin Prison, including on fabricated charges. The second report expands on the regime’s mistreatment of prisoners, documenting a violent attack by guards on political prisoners in Sheiban Prison.
These reports underscore the urgent need for international intervention and a fact-finding mission to investigate the conditions in Iranian prisons and secure the release of political prisoners. The Iranian regime must be held accountable for its egregious violations of human rights.
Report on Iran Regime’s Efforts to Execute Political Prisoners in Evin Prison
The Iranian regime’s criminal prosecutor has requested the death sentence for a number of political prisoners in Evin Prison, including Mehdi Hassani, Behrouz Ehsani, and Hossein Derakhshani, on fabricated charges of “baghi” (rebellion) and “moharebeh” (enmity against God). Mehdi Hassani has been in solitary confinement for more than seven months and has been subjected to physical and psychological torture. Previously, Shahriar Bayat was sentenced to “execution by hanging” on the fabricated charge of “sabb al-nabi” (insulting the prophet).
The Iranian Resistance calls on the UN High Commissioner and Human Rights Council, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran, the International Fact-Finding Mission, and all human rights defenders to take urgent action to stop the execution of political prisoners and to secure their release.
The Resistance emphasizes the need for a visit by a fact-finding mission to Iran’s prisons and to meet with prisoners, especially political prisoners.
Report on Abuse of Prisoners in Sheiban Prison
Additionally, on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, the brutal guards of Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz, led by the prison director Mohammad Niazi and the head of prison counterintelligence Abdolhossein Gholamnejad, attacked Ward 5, which houses political prisoners.
They destroyed or looted all of the prisoners’ belongings, including beds, refrigerators, and personal items. Gholamnejad had previously shot and killed prisoners in attacks at Sheiban Prison.
Political prisoners in Sheiban Prison suffer from severe medical issues but are denied treatment or medical leave.
The Iranian Resistance calls for the condemnation of this attack and the brutal treatment of prisoners in Sheiban by the UN Human Rights Council and High Commissioner and all international human rights defenders.
It emphasizes the need for an international fact-finding mission to visit Iranian prisons and meet with prisoners, especially political prisoners, and the need for their release.
