Prominent US Figures Condemn Iranian Regime’s Executions and Urge Global Support for a Free, Democratic Iran

In a significant display of international concern, twenty-six prominent American figures have come together to issue a powerful statement condemning the recent executions of two members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani. This collective declaration highlights grave human rights violations committed by the Iranian regime and calls for urgent global action to support the Iranian people’s pursuit of freedom, dignity, and democracy.

Below, you can read the highlights of the statement from prominent American figures:

“We, the undersigned, strongly condemn the executions carried out by the Iranian regime, including the recent executions of Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani on July 27th, 2025. These political prisoners were executed on overly broad and vaguely defined charges, following unfair trials that lacked due process.”

The statement highlighted the findings of United Nations Special Rapporteur Javid Rehman, who in his 2024 report addressed the charge of Moharebeh (waging war against God) and the regime’s systematic killings of PMOI members and their supporters. Mr. Rehman identified the charge of Moharebeh and the killing of tens of thousands of PMOI and sympathizers was for no other reason than that these Muslims believed Islam is consistent with full political rights and gender equality. Mr. Rehman concluded this to be genocide.

The signatories warned that Tehran’s actions echo past atrocities. State media, such as Fars News Agency, have brazenly called for executions reminiscent of the 1988 massacre, which claimed up to 30,000 political prisoners, primarily PMOI members and affiliates. Mr. Geoffrey Robertson compared the massacre to Srebrenica and the Bataan Death March.

They stressed that repression is intensifying as dissent grows. According to the United Nations, at least 612 executions occurred in Iran in the first half of 2025, more than double the number recorded during the same period in 2024.

The statement also highlighted the words of political prisoner Saeed Masouri, Iran’s longest-held political prisoner for 25 years. As a political prisoner and supporter of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, PMOI, I declare that we shall never retreat from the path of freedom and dignity, despite imprisonment, exile, or executions.

The signatories emphasized that the regime’s brutality reflects fear, not power. The regime’s ongoing atrocities reflect not strength, but the panic and fear of long-lost legitimacy.

They praised the critical role of the Iranian Resistance. The international community must commend the role of the PMOI network in Iran and the NCRI in playing a decades-long crucial role in exposing major nuclear sites of Iran, its experts, its weaponization program, and the delivery systems.

In particular, the signatories reaffirmed their support for the NCRI’s Ten Point Plan for a democratic, secular, and free Iran, emphasizing its importance as a roadmap for the country’s future.

The Ten Point Plan underscores the need for the establishment of a secular republic that guarantees full political freedoms, human rights, gender equality, and the rule of law.

They also highlighted the indispensability of the MEK in the Iranian resistance, acknowledging their long-standing role in championing democracy and freedom in Iran.

Finally, they issued a clear call to action:

  • Strongly condemn the executions of Mehdi Hassani and Behrouz Ehsani and the systematic human rights violations in Iran.

  • Demand an immediate halt to political executions and the call for the release of all prisoners of conscience.

  • Recognize the right of the Iranian people to resist tyranny, pursue self-determination, and establish a democratic, secular republic.

  • Commend the unwavering and relentless endeavor of the NCRI and the PMOI to restore popular sovereignty to the long-suffering people of Iran, and to replace the Tehran dictatorship with a process leading to a democratic government where the legitimacy of rulers is determined by the ballot box.

“We stand in solidarity with the people of Iran and their rightful struggle for freedom, dignity, and democratic governance.”
