In Iran, the machinery of execution continues to claim lives at a horrifying pace. On Tuesday, August 19, 2025 (28 Mordad 1404), the 82nd consecutive week of the campaign “No to Execution Tuesdays” was marked inside 49 prisons across the country. Despite censorship and threats, prisoners raised their voices once again, denouncing the Iranian regime’s use of executions as a tool of repression.
A Surge in Executions Across Iran
According to the prisoners’ statement, 128 people were executed between August 1 and August 18 alone. Since the beginning of 2025, at least 619 people have been hanged.
“These numbers are not merely statistics,” the statement reads, “but the stories of lives cut short and families plunged into grief and despair.”
Disappearance of Political Prisoners
The campaign highlighted the continued disappearance of five political prisoners—Vahid Beni Amrian, Pouya Ghobadi, Babak Alipour, Mohammad Taghavi, and Akbar (Shahrokh) Daneshvarkar—along with one security prisoner, Babak Shahbazi. All face death sentences. Their unknown fate is described as “a blatant violation of human rights and a symbol of escalating pressure on prisoners.”
Sharifeh Mohammadi’s Death Sentence Upheld
The Supreme Court’s confirmation of the death sentence against political prisoner Sharifeh Mohammadi was condemned as further proof of injustice and cruelty in Iran’s judiciary.
“This tyrannical government has lost all legitimacy in the eyes of society,” prisoners declared.
Prisoners’ Call for Solidarity
The statement continues:
“The statistics of executions reveal a human tragedy. These figures reflect not only the scale of state violence but also the lived reality of mourning families and shattered communities. We strongly condemn the wave of executions and the intensifying pressures on prisoners. We honor the courage of families who, by gathering outside prisons, have become the voice of the silenced. We call on all compatriots not to abandon the families of prisoners, especially those condemned to death.”
The campaign urges people across Iran and abroad to use every available means—demonstrations, solidarity actions, and awareness campaigns—to resist the death penalty and expose systematic state violence.
Hunger Strikes in 49 Prisons
On this 82nd week of “No to Execution Tuesdays”, political prisoners in 49 prisons—including Evin, Ghezel Hesar, Greater Tehran, Karaj, Qarchak, Shiraz, Ahvaz, Zahedan, Mashhad, Urmia, and Sanandaj—joined hunger strikes and protests.
For the prisoners and their families, “No to Execution Tuesdays” has become both a cry of resistance and a demand for justice.
