Essen, Germany – MEK Supporters Commemorate 1981 Uprising, Call for a Democratic Republic in Iran

Essen, Germany – September 27, 2025

Essen, Germany – September 27, 2025 – Supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) gathered in Essen to commemorate the anniversary of the September 27, 1981 uprising (5 Mehr 1360) in Tehran. They reaffirmed their pledge to continue the struggle until the overthrow of the clerical regime in Iran.

On that day in 1981, Iranian students and youth supporting the PMOI launched a historic uprising, breaking the regime’s red lines with chants of “Death to Khomeini, Long Live Freedom.” The regime’s response was swift and brutal. Eyewitnesses reported that 1,800 protesters and MEK supporters were executed in Evin Prison that very night.

At the rally in Essen, participants expressed solidarity with the 2022 nationwide uprising and called on the German government to close the Iranian regime’s embassy and designate the IRGC as a terrorist organization.

The gathering also served as a powerful act of defiance against Iran’s regime escalating human rights violations, the surge in executions, and the regime’s ongoing campaign of repression. Participants urged the international community to ensure accountability and justice for the victims of state violence.

The Iranian community in Essen condemned all forms of dictatorship—both clerical and monarchical—stressing that Iran’s future must be based on democracy, human rights, and popular sovereignty.

The event concluded with a strong appeal to the global community to stand with the Iranian people, recognize their right to resist tyranny, and support the MEK Resistance Units in their determined struggle for freedom, dignity, and a democratic republic.
