Maryam Rajavi Calls for Urgent International Intervention
Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), delivered a strong message to a Human Rights Forum in Geneva, urging immediate UN action against what she described as “ongoing killings and a bloodbath unfolding inside Iran’s prisons.” She said the rising executions represent “Khamenei’s war against the people of Iran” and a major test for the global community.
UN Recognition of the 1988 Massacre as Crimes Against Humanity
Mrs. Rajavi welcomed the recent UN General Assembly Third Committee resolution referencing the 1988 massacre of political prisoners. She highlighted that the July 2024 report by Special Rapporteur Javaid Rehman marked the first UN recognition of the 1980s executions and the 1988 massacre as acts of genocide and crimes against humanity.
Recalling the Assassinated Advocate Kazem Rajavi
Reflecting on past injustices, Mrs. Rajavi recalled the assassination of Prof. Kazem Rajavi in Geneva, twenty months after the execution of 30,000 political prisoners in 1988. She condemned decades of international silence, noting that Massoud Rajavi had informed the UN Secretary-General just weeks after the massacre, yet no action was taken.
Escalating Executions and Regional Destabilization
Mrs. Rajavi warned of a sharp rise in executions. She stated that Iran’s clerical regime executed 865 people two years ago, 1,000 last year, and 1,650 so far this year. Thousands remain on death row, including political prisoners such as Zahra Tabari and Javad Vafaei Sani. She described these killings as part of a unified strategy that includes exporting terrorism and expanding nuclear activities.
Demand for UN Security Council Measures
Calling for decisive global action, Mrs. Rajavi urged the United Nations to refer Iran’s human rights violations to the UN Security Council. She emphasized the need for member states to prosecute regime leaders under universal jurisdiction and demanded pressure on Iran to allow UN officials access to prisons, particularly facilities holding long-term political prisoners.
Hope for an Iran Free from Executions and Torture
Mrs. Rajavi concluded by affirming the Iranian Resistance’s mission to end torture and executions. She expressed confidence that organized resistance and nationwide uprisings will ultimately secure a free and democratic future for Iran.
