Iranian Political Prisoner Shahin Zoghi-Tabar Pledges Defiance from Evin Prison

Iranian Political Prisoner Shahin Zoghi-Tabar

In the midst of Iran’s intensifying crackdown and a surge in executions, Shahin Zoghi-Tabar, a political prisoner in Evin Prison, has emerged as a voice of defiance. In a December 2025 audio message, he declared his unwavering commitment to the overthrow of the religious dictatorship and his support for the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).

In his emotional message, Zoghi-Tabar stated how joining the PMOI gave him purpose and strength through resistance. He swore to stand by the PMOI “proudly until the last drop of blood” and until the “overthrow of the bloodthirsty mullahs’ regime” and the transfer of sovereignty to the people of Iran. He concluded with the chant “Hazer, Hazer, Hazer” (Ready, Ready, Ready), signaling his readiness for struggle despite the “most fearful type of suffocation and repression.”

Enduring Persecution for Peaceful Activism

Zoghi-Tabar’s courage has come at a high cost. Following a sham trial on August 17, 2025, led by Judge Iman Afshari at Branch 26 of Tehran Revolutionary Court, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison. The charges—“assembly and collusion” and “membership in the PMOI”—stemmed from peaceful actions such as meeting PMOI families, writing slogans, and distributing flyers.

Since his violent arrest on August 2, 2025, Zoghi-Tabar’s health has deteriorated sharply. Initially held in Fashafuyeh Prison, harsh conditions caused severe kidney problems and leg swelling, for which he is still denied adequate medical care in Evin. This is not his first imprisonment; he previously served four years starting in 2013 for refusing to stay silent against the regime.

Rising Threat of Executions

Zoghi-Tabar’s message gains significance amid the regime’s acceleration of executions. Authorities are targeting PMOI supporters to instill fear. Boxing champion and political prisoner Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani is in solitary confinement in Mashhad’s Vakilabad Prison, with his death sentence sent for implementation.

Earlier in December 2025, political prisoner Karim Khojasteh was notified of his death sentence, alongside the reconfirmation of death sentences for six others. At least 18 political prisoners currently face execution for supporting the PMOI.

Resistance Cannot Be Silenced

Since July 2024, over 2,500 prisoners have been executed under Masoud Pezeshkian, demonstrating the regime’s harsh suppression. Officials hint at repeating 1988-style massacres to survive mounting unrest.

Yet, Zoghi-Tabar’s message proves that while the regime can imprison bodies, it cannot imprison the spirit of resistance or its ideas. The international community and human rights defenders are urged to act urgently to save lives and hold the regime accountable.
