Statement says nuclear pursuit and regional interference are regime survival tools; calls for end to executions and repression of protesters in any deal
Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), said the Iranian Resistance “welcomes any understanding to end the war and the suffering of the Iranian people,” emphasizing its long-standing pursuit of freedom and peace over nearly five decades.
In her statement, she argued that in Iran, “no one except the remnants of the mullahs and the Shah” has wanted war, adding that nuclear weapons development, warmongering, and interference in regional countries are part of what she described as the ruling system’s strategy for survival. She stated that the government would not abandon these policies as long as it can, and characterized war as a protective shield for the regime against popular uprisings, while describing peace and ceasefire as, in Khomeini’s words, “poison” for it.
She further stated that the overthrow of the current system is the responsibility of the Iranian people and their organized resistance.
Mrs. Rajavi also stressed that any international agreement aimed at ending the war must include provisions to stop the execution of political prisoners and the killing of protesters.
