Week 135: Prisoners in 61 Iranian prisons continue their hunger strike against the regime’s execution machine.
In its 135th consecutive week, the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign has expanded further as prisoners in Noor Prison (Mazandaran Province) joined the movement. On Tuesday, August 25, 2026 (3 Shahrivar 1405), inmates across 61 prisons nationwide staged a coordinated hunger strike to protest the ongoing issuance and implementation of death sentences.
This campaign, now entering its third year, has grown from a limited protest into one of the most sustained and widespread organized acts of resistance inside Iran’s prisons against the death penalty. Despite intensifying security pressure, threats, communication restrictions, and punitive measures, the weekly hunger strikes continue unbroken, underscoring the prisoners’ unwavering demand for an end to executions and the defense of the right to life.
Surge in Executions and Alarming Judicial Changes
The campaign warns of a sharp rise in executions alongside heightened repression. At least 378 people have been executed since the beginning of the Iranian year 1405, while the total number of executions since the Pezeshkian government took office has surpassed 4,000. Recent changes in the judiciary, carried out under the direct influence of security agencies and the “Velayat-e Faqih” apparatus, pose a grave new threat to death-row prisoners. With no independent oversight and prisoners routinely denied the right to choose their own lawyers, the risk of arbitrary executions has increased significantly.
In the past week alone, two political prisoners from the December 2017–January 2018 protests were hanged: Ghaem Hosseini in Isfahan Prison and Majid Adineh in Karaj Central Prison. Death sentences have also been upheld or issued for several other political prisoners, including Arghavan Fallahi (Evin Prison women’s ward), Rasoul Rezaei (Vakilabad Prison, Mashhad), and Mohammadreza Majidi-Asl, who was abruptly transferred from Greater Tehran Prison to Qezelhesar — a notorious execution center that has heightened fears for his life.
Noor Prison Joins the Campaign
A group of prisoners in Noor Prison has now joined the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign, bringing the total number of participating prisons to 61. The campaign’s members emphasize that their only hope lies in collective resistance, public solidarity, and the awakened consciences that continue to stand against the regime’s killing machine.
They express deep gratitude to retirees and all those who raise the cry of “No to Execution” in streets and gatherings, and call for broader support for the teachers’ “No to Execution” initiative from workers and other social forces. In every classroom, they urge, children must be taught that the right to life always takes precedence over death and execution.
