Iran: International protests by PMOI and NCRI supporters simultaneous with anti-monarchic revolution’s anniversary
Iranians, supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq or MEK) and the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) will hold rallies and marches for two consecutive days on February 7 and 8, simultaneous with the anniversary of the 1979 anti-monarchic revolution in Iran.
These rallies by the NCRI and PMOI supporters will be held in different cities across Europe and the United States and Canada. The participants will honor those who sacrificed their lives back in the 1980s and paved the way for the long battle of freedom until today.
These rallies are part of an international campaign By Iranian communities and will be held in London, Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Toronto, Rome, Munich, Geneva, and Washington, DC.
The participants will also pay tribute to 1,500 slain protesters during the Iran protests in November 2019; and will call on the international community to guarantee the freedom of over 12,000 people detained during the protests, who are subjected to harsh torture, according to reports published by the PMOI and NCRI.
These rallies will be attended by political dignitaries, members of parliament, and human rights advocates who will urge the international community, in particular the EU, to condemn the clerical regime for its countless crimes and to stand with the Iranian people and their desire for the establishment of a pluralistic and democratic government.
Background
Nationwide Iran protests erupted in November 2019 and January 2020, shook the regime’s foundations, demonstrated the people’s desire for regime change. The Iranian regime imposed a deadly crackdown killing more than 1,500 and arresting 12,000 protesters. The Iranian economy is in in a free fall and continuing protests in Iraq and Lebanon, as well as the elimination of Qassem Soleimani, head of the Revolutionary Guards’ Quds Force, have stricken strategic blows to the mullahs’ belligerence in the region, which was indispensable to their survival for four decades. The regime’s authorities repeatedly warn about the explosive state of the society and even larger protests looming. These developments make it palpably clear that that Iran is on the verge of a major change.
