Event held in support of people of Iran in Canadian Parliament
The people of Iran have been battling for freedom, human rights and democracy for decades and they are slowly getting the attention of the international community.
Most recently, Canadian lawmakers gathered in Canadian Parliament to hold an event entitled “Iran: Human Rights, uprisings and West’s political options”. Dozens of members of Canadian Parliament, Senators and lawmakers attended the event, as did a number of well-known politicians from the United States. Many supporters of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI / MEK) were also in attendance.
Conservative MP James Bezan and Liberal Party MP Judy Sgro called for the event to take place with the cooperation of the Canadian Committee of Friends of a Democratic Iran. Former Canadian MP David Kilgore acted as the moderator of the event and spoke about the work that has already been accomplished with regards to the recent activity in Iran.
Kilgore also spoke about the progress made by Canada with regards to holding the Iranian regime accountable for its belligerence. He said that the MEK was delisted as a terrorist organisation under the previous conservative government. Then, he said that it was a major accomplishment for Canada to list the Quds Force – the extra-territorial branch of the notorious Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as a terrorist entity – a move that many countries have failed to make despite the overwhelming evidence proving the organisation’s malign actions.
Speaking about the air tragedy at the beginning of January in which the IRGC shot down a Ukrainian passenger jet in error, Bezan said that the regime must be held accountable. Almost 200 passengers and crew were killed, and there were more than 50 citizens on board.
He said that moving forward, Canada should blacklist Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
One of the speakers from the United States was former Senator Robert Torricelli who has been a friend of the Iranian Resistance movement for many years. He spoke extensively of his experiences with the Iranian opposition and sent messages of support to the people of Iran. Torricelli said that the end is in sight for the Iranian regime. “This fight will not only be won; it will be won soon. And most importantly, victory is inevitable because that’s the human experience.”
The victims of the Ukrainian airline crash and the recent martyrs of the protests that have taken place in all corners of Iran were commemorated in an exhibition that was put up by the organisers.
Also from the United States, Ambassador Lincoln Bloomfield spoke about the Ukrainian air tragedy, expressing his condolences to those that lost loved ones because of the Iranian regime’s negligence. His speech concentrated on the role of the PMOI / MEK and he emphasized the importance of the work it is doing on behalf of the people of Iran.
This also brought Bloomfield to talk about the regime’s demonetization of the main opposition, which serves only to highlight how much of a threat it poses to the regime.
