Exiled Iranians urge German Gov’t to condemn regime over coronavirus
Exiled Iranians and dissidents in Germany have written to Chancellor Angela Merkel and other members of the Bundestag to urge them to condemn the Iranian regime’s illegal cover-up of the coronavirus outbreak in the Gulf state.
In the letter, the Association of Exiled Iranian Societies in Germany, explained that the death toll gathered by the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) – currently 20,400 – was more accurate than the official death toll, which is being hidden by the mullahs. (Even the World Health Organization believes that the regime’s reported death toll is just 1/50th of the true number.)
The letter read: “The main cause of the spread of the Coronavirus [COVID-19] and the disastrous death of our compatriots is not due to the lack of medical facilities, specialist staff or hospital beds, but to the inhumane policies of the ruling dictatorship in Iran under [Supreme Leader Ali] Khamenei and [President Hassan] Rouhani. Instead of proclaiming the outbreak of the virus in Iran, alerting the public and calling on the health system to be ready, the spread of the virus is deliberately kept secret. The regime slanders and denies the existence of coronavirus-infected people in the country. The problem is presented as small, insignificant and short-lived.”
The Association said that the regime deliberately hid the initial outbreak for two to three weeks, according to evidence from the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), in order increase turnout at the anniversary parades and the election. The regime also continued its flights to China, while downplaying the spread of the virus and claiming that the hospitals were more than able to cope.
Furthermore, the regime has been denying the Iranian people the money they would need to stay home and slow the spread, as well as hoarding medical supplies, like sanitizer, masks, and gloves, for their officials and security teams.
Those who protested the regime on social media have been arrested and are likely being tortured. All the while, the coronavirus outbreak in prisons grows worse, causing riots, and many prisoners were shot dead by guards.
The letter read: “The regime’s management of this issue is devoid of any sympathy for the people of Iran and takes no account of morality or human rights.”
The Association said that by condemning this cover-up, the German government would help the Iranian people. They further urged the German politicians and the international community to take immediate action to help the people of Iran.
They asked the German government to:
- condemn the regime’s handling and cover-up of the coronavirus and its death toll
- condemn the regime’s for expelling “Doctors Without Borders”, which was done to conceal the true number of deaths and infections
- pressure the regime to accept international aid under the supervision of the World Health Organization
- support Amnesty’s International call and put pressure on the regime to release prisoners, especially political prisoners.
- not provide any financial aid to the regime, which would be spent on terrorism and domestic repression
