Excerpts of the speech of Congressman Don Bacon From Nebraska’s 2nd district, at the Free Iran 2022, is as follows:
Hi. I’m Congressman Don Bacon from Nebraska’s second district. Thank you for allowing me to speak to you today at the 2022 Free Iran World Summit.
Many Americans recall the Iran hostage crisis, which began when supporters of the Ayatollah Khomeini invaded the United States embassy in Iran and kidnapped dozens of Americans. Khomeini seized power in December 1979 and moved to suppress many of his fellow countrymen and threatened the security of the global order. This brutal regime remains in power today.
I will never forget the horror of people being hanged on the street corners and others being thrown off the top of buildings. The radical mullahs brought terror to the Iranian people. The brutality has not changed today. I absolutely condemn the atrocities committed by the present Iranian regime, both within Iran and around the world.
I support a democratic, secular, and nonnuclear Iran. Mrs. Maryam Rajavi has this vision for her country. In her 10 Point Plan for Iran, she presents a platform which resembles our United States Constitution and promises to the Iranians the values that we Americans hold dear: sovereignty in the hands of the people, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of assembly, full equality for women and an independent judiciary.
Mrs. Rajavi’s vision brings peace to a country whose current regime has both deprived its own citizens of these fundamental rights and has been directly responsible for committing unspeakable atrocities against their own people and against people around the world.
Today, Iran is the foremost exporter of terror in the world. This is not supported by Iranians, but is a product of the ruling regime.
As we look to the future of Iran, we recognize and support all Iranians, such as yourselves, who are yearning for freedom, opportunity, and basic human rights. We know you desire peace and a government that is a force for good and not evil.
House Resolution 118 would put the American government on record in favor of supporting the freedom loving people of Iran and condemn the present regime and the brutal crimes and terrorism that they are responsible for.
This bill currently has 254 cosponsors in the U.S. House of Representatives, and I am one of them. I urge the House to bring this bill to a vote immediately. Passing this resolution will show the world that the United States stands in solidarity with you, the freedom loving people of Iran.
I thank those who continue to strive for a better future for Iran. Thank you.
