According to the NCRI, on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, a judge at Vakil Abad Prison in Mashhad, capital of the northeastern Razavi Khorasan Province, sentenced to death Mohammad Javad Vafa’i Thani, a political prisoner sympathizing with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
Mr. Vafa’i Thani, 27, among the boxing champions in Mashhad’s boxing clubs, was arrested in March 2020 and tortured for a long time.
The Iranian Resistance calls on the United Nations, the European Union, and member states, as well as all human rights organizations and bodies to take urgent action to save the life of this political prisoner and prevent his execution after serving a four-year prison term.

Germany—July 19-20, 2023: Freedom-loving Iranians and supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) held rallies and called to the international community for action to prevent the execution of political prisoner Mohammad Javad Vafa’i Thani, in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, and Hamburg.
MEK supporters in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, and Hamburg condemned the wave of brutal executions in Iran by the religious dictatorship.
In addition, the Iranian Resistance supporters in Berlin, Cologne, Munich, and Hamburg urged the international community to support the Iran Revolution and take a firm stance against the oppressive regime of the mullahs.
96 NGOs, human rights experts write to Volker Türk to help prevent imminent execution in Iran
JVMI is among 96 international NGOs, current and former United Nations officials, human rights and legal experts, and Nobel laureates that have sent an urgent letter to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, requesting his urgent intervention to prevent the imminent execution of Mohammad Javad Vafa’i Thani, an Iranian boxing champion who is on death row in Iran for taking part in the anti-government protests.
It is worth mentioning that protests in Iran have to this day expanded to at least 282 cities. Over 750 people have been killed and more than 30,000 are arrested by the regime’s forces, according to sources of the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). The names of 675 killed protesters have been published by the MEK.
