Human Rights abuses continue in Iran
The Iranian regime is in a desperate position. After the death of Qassem Soleimani of the notorious Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) Quds Force, the regime’s isolation has become more and more evident.
Therefore, the regime has continued to suppress the people of Iran to intimidate them into submission and silence. It is also continuing to execute people, even for minor crimes, and is still handing out medieval forms of punishment. In another word it has increased its Human Rights abuses.
In the city of Shahreza in central Iran, a man who was accused of theft was flogged in public. According to the prosecutor, the man aged twenty-three was flogged in a square in the city. He is said to have been flogged 74 times.
A local new publication said that the man had been stealing from shops and private residences for a number of years. The publication also published a photo of the flogging that showed the man being tied to a structure while people looked on in horror. This is a clear sign of regime’s Human Rights abuses.
Local officials commented that the authorities have been trying to keep the city secure.
Cruel punishments like amputations are very common. Many people have been amputated in recent years for theft and the Iranian regime takes no heed of international laws and obligations that forbid it from taking such action. The regime is party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in which it is expressly stated that torture, inhumane, degrading and cruel treatment and punishments are strictly forbidden. Yet, it has been increasing its Human Rights abuses.
The people of Iran are getting poorer and poorer because of the regime’s poor economic decisions, its corruption and its mismanagement. It is therefore no surprise that theft is rampant in the country as many people are living in absolute poverty. However, the people must be protected from the regime that ignores human rights regulations.
The people want change and they know that this is only possible when the regime collapses. They want to be granted the human rights that they have been denied for decades. And the main opposition to the regime is ready to ensure this happens.
