Iran’s Human Rights Abuses in October 2020

Iran Human Rights Monitor released on November 1, 2020, its latest monthly report into human rights abuses in Iran. This report stressed that the State Security Forces are becoming increasingly violent towards the Iranian people in public as we approach the anniversary of the November 2019 uprising.

Two young men killed and one woman beaten in shocking instances of police brutality caught on camera. But the fact that they aren’t even trying to hide it suggests that this is about scaring other Iranians out of protesting; not that it will work.

Iran’s Human Rights Abuses: Executions

The regime executed at least 19 people in October, including Shahrouz Kazemi, 28. He was in prison for armed robbery. Also, Razieh, 37, who committed murder. However, both of their crimes took place because they impoverished and the regime keeps forcing more people into poverty.

It is also highly unlikely that any of these people received a fair trial with access to a lawyer.

Iran’s Human Rights Abuses: Arbitrary murders

The regime’s security forces killed at least 10 people, including the two men above – Mohsen Min Bashi and Mehrdad Sepehri – and 17-year-old Ashkan Azizi. They were killed only for supposed crimes without even going through the façade of a trial.

The regime refused to acknowledge the problem with Chief Justice Ebrahim Reisi even saying that this shouldn’t be used as an “excuse to weaken the police”.

Iran’s Human Rights Abuses: Torture

The regime carried out at least four amputation sentences and issued at least one, following unfair trials. They also lashed at least five prisoners; one a Christian charged with drinking wine during communion.

Iran’s Human Rights Abuses: Political prisoners

Meanwhile, the group facing the most danger is political prisoners. Iran HRM was able to reveal some of them and the conditions they are kept in, but warned that this is “only a small part of the reality”.

  • Soheil Arabi was moved to solitary confinement in Ward 2-A at Evin Prison. Evin is a notorious repressive center under the control of the IRGC.
  • Behnam Mahjoubi, a Gonabadi Dervish, sent to the Aminabad psychiatric hospital against his will after stating a hunger strike on October 29 to protest a lack of medical care in prison
  • Zahra Safaei had a heart stroke after harassment and mistreatment by Qarchak Prison officials but was only allowed a brief examination in the prison’s dispensary before she was returned to the ward.
  • Massoumeh Senobari contracted the Coronavirus in the Central Prison of Tabriz and appears to have severe symptoms. But authorities are not isolating the sick, so they are infecting more people
  • Fatemeh Mosanna was denied adequate medical treatment in Evin Prison. They transferred her to Taleghani Hospital on October 27 for severe internal bleeding but was returned to prison against doctor’s advice
  • Ebrahim Khalil Sediqi Hamedani was denied his insulin, and he will die without it
