Iran: Inhuman Pressure of the Mullahs’ Regime on the Political Prisoner Maryam Akbari Monfared

Political prisoner Maryam Akbari Monfared is facing intensifying inhuman pressures following her transfer from the notorious Evin prison of Tehran to Semnan prison. Mrs. Akbari Monfared was transferred to Semnan prison and has since faced various restrictions and pressures. Mrs. Akbari was under constant interrogation after her transfer to the Drug Detention center of Semnan, located east of Tehran. Maryam Akbari Monfared has been forced to endure such pressures despite her already deteriorating health conditions.

Maryam Akbari’s phone calls are also prohibited or strictly limited. Mrs. Akbari was imprisoned for protesting the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners.

Maryam Akbari Monfared has not had a single day of leave for the medical treatment she urgently needs. The Mullahs’ regime executed three of her brothers and a sister. Alireza Akbari, a member of the MEK, was executed in 1981. Gholamreza Akbari, also a member of the MEK, was murdered under torture in 1985. MEK members Abdulreza and Roghiyeh Akbari were executed during the 1988 massacre. Also, Maryam herself was arrested in December 2009 following the 2009 uprising and sentenced to 15 years in prison. Maryam Akbari is constantly placed under inhuman torture and pressures. She’s emphasizing that seeking truth and justice is the right of all survivors and families of the 1988 massacre.

On March 10, Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the Iranian opposition coalition National Council of Resistance of Iran(NCRI), has repeatedly reiterated the need for an international delegation to visit the clerical regime’s prisons and meet with prisoners, especially political prisoners. Madam Rajavi urged the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women to investigate the health conditions of Maryam Akbari and Golrokh Ebrahimi Eraei, another female political prisoner behind bars in Iran.

In 1988, based on a fatwa of then supreme leader Ruhollah Khomeini, all prisoners who remained steadfast on their opposition to the regime were executed. Most of them were members and sympathizers of the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
