Statement in support of Iranian workers – for the occasion of International Workers’ Day
Date: April 2021
In the current situation where the Iranian regime violates the most basic rights of Iranian citizens, systematic violations of workers’ rights in Iran by the ruling regime have continued over the past years. The living conditions of a large segment of Iranian society especially workers now are very difficult, and millions of people live below the poverty line.
The most important production companies and economical institutions that employs workers are under control of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) or the organs or the so-called private sector affiliated with IRGC that apply the most pressure and repression on workers. Meanwhile, many workers have not been paid their salaries for months or years. Workers’ conditions are getting worse every day, and poverty, unemployment and inflation rate are rising. Throughout last year, thousands of workers in manufacturing and industrial sectors in different cities of Iran have protested non-payment of wages, not being covered by insurance or other benefits some of these protests continued until today. The Iranian regime has signed the international labor conventions but does not recognize the rights and freedoms of trade unions!
On the eve of International Workers’ Day, in solidarity with the Iranian workers, we support their strikes and protests in to gain their rights.
We, on the eve of International Labor Day; While supporting Iranian workers, we want all the authorities and organizations defending workers’ rights to condemn the Iranian regime for trampling basic rights of Iranian workers.
We ask of all the federations, unions, and trade unions in different countries to join us in declaring their solidarity with these workers, in any way possible come to their aid in Iran and support their rightful and just demands.
We call on the United Nations and the International Labor Organization to protect the rights of Iranian workers and condemn the Iranian regime for systematic violations of workers’ rights.
Sincerely yours,
Bogdan Iuliu Hossu President of NTUC Cartel Alfa
