On July 10th, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) will hold its Free Iran World Summit, which is the largest gathering of its kind, virtually for the second year in a row.
At the summit, tens of thousands of Iranian citizens, democracy advocates, lawmakers, government officials, and personalities will gather to highlight how the Iranian regime has little hope of prolonged survival and how Iranians want to replace the mullahs with a secular and democratic republic. Speakers will address many topics, but perhaps the most important are the policies that the rest of the world should take with regard to the Iranian regime and the Ten-point plan for a Free Iran by NCRI President Maryam Rajavi.
Let’s look at those points in a bit more detail here.
The NCRI and the Iranian people want the world to bring the Iranian regime, particularly new president Ebrahim Raisi, to justice for their crimes against humanity. This notably includes the 1988 massacre, when Raisi served on the “death commissions” that sent thousands of political prisoners to their deaths after show trials where they were merely asked to confirm their political affiliation. And they are not the only groups to call for this.
Angès Callamard, Secretary-General of Amnesty International, said last month: “That Ebrahim Raisi has risen to the presidency instead of being investigated for the crimes against humanity of murder, enforced disappearance, and torture is a grim reminder that impunity reigns supreme in Iran.”
Meanwhile, United Nations investigator on human rights in Iran Javaid Rehman urged for the UN to launch an independent inquiry into the massacre and Raisi’s role, while many Western politicians have called for sanctions against Raisi to end the impunity that the mullahs have long been afforded.
For their part, the Iranian people have made it abundantly clear in their protests and uprisings that they do not have hope for reform in Iran under the mullahs. Indeed, that explains why the people boycotted the 2020 parliamentary elections and the 2021 presidential elections. That’s why they are supporting the NCRI and Maryam Rajavi, as well as the 10-point plan that would see the establishment of a democratic republic that respects personal freedoms, including those of speech, assembly, religion, and the press.
The plan also seeks to ensure complete equality for all genders, nationalities, ethnicities, as well as the creation of an independent judiciary and legal system, a ban on nuclear weapons, and the provision of equality in employment.
The NCRI wrote: “Join the Free Iran World Summit 2021 in solidarity with the Iranian people, particularly Iranian women, and their desire for democratic change and freedom in Iran.”
