Remarks by German MEP Niels Geuking at the Free Iran 2024 World Summit – Day 2

German MEP Niels Geuking

On June 30, 2024,  at the Free Iran 2024 World Summit – Day 2 hosted at the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) headquarters in Paris, German Member of the European Parliament Niels Geuking delivered a passionate speech.

MEP Geuking called on the European Union to adopt a more decisive policy towards the Iranian regime, central to which must be the recognition of the Iranian people’s right to resist oppression. This includes acknowledging the democratic alternative proposed by the National Council of Resistance of Iran and Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan as foundational principles for a new, modern Iran.

A translated version of MEP Niels Geuking’s speech follows:

Dear guests from around the world and present members and comrades for a free Iran,

Let me begin by expressing my gratitude to the tireless organizers. Year after year, you shine a light on the horrors in Iran, gradually opening the eyes of the global public. Thank you for your invaluable commitment.

It is a pleasure for me to stand before you today at this summit, not only as a Member of the European Parliament for the Family Party of Germany but also as a young, freedom-loving individual. For freedom is the essential element that unites all of us on this planet.

Yesterday, Saturday, in Berlin, as I saw back in February, thousands, even tens of thousands more faces, yearn for nothing more than a free society where everyone is treated equally.

At the mass rallies in Berlin, you raised the true voice of the Iranian people. You declared a clear no to the sham elections in Iran with strictly selected candidates and a resounding yes to ending the dictatorship and establishing a democratic, secular republic.

For far too long, the Iranian people have been denied their most fundamental rights by a regime based on oppression, deceit, and selfishness. But the Iranian resistance is alive and growing, as evidenced by the enormous crowd at the Free Iran rally in Berlin. You are all the true voice of the Iranian people, embodying the hope and determination to end this inhumane dictatorship.

You called out a resounding no to all forms of dictatorship that violently oppress the Iranian people. The Iranian people’s desire is clear. They demand political change, and it is the duty of democratic countries to recognize and actively support this call for change. We must find more ways to dry up the trade in death.

It is time for the European Union, with all its institutions, to pursue a more determined policy towards this regime. The core of this policy must also include recognizing the right of the Iranian people to resist oppression. It also means acknowledging the democratic alternative of the National Council of Resistance of Iran and the ten-point plan of President Maryam Rajavi as substantial, constitutional foundations for a new, modern Iran. This is and can only be the future of Iran. This is the Iran we all strive for here. This is the Iran we want to achieve together.

But, and this is unfortunately also the bitter truth, the path that the Iranian people still have to travel is full of suffering and deprivation. I have already seen numerous faces, as we all have, faces that are no longer with us today or cannot be. Murdered in the fight for democracy, fallen for a better world for themselves, their families, and future generations.

Let us remember these now-silent heroes, give their families strength and comfort, and take a brief moment to honor them.

Thank you, and remain steadfast, remain steadfast. History shows that every people can achieve their freedom if they muster the courage and strength to make the necessary efforts. And the attainment of democracy is ultimately the greatest victory a people can achieve. Remain steadfast so that one day the Iranian people can live in peace and freedom.
