Iran: 159 members of the French Parliament have called for “a democratic alternative”
AFP – July 8, 2025 – A group of 159 French Members of Parliament have signed a statement expressing their support for a “democratic alternative” in Iran, according to an announcement made Tuesday by the Parliamentary Committee for a Democratic Iran (CPID), which brings these MPs together.

Christine Arrighi, a member of the French National Assembly from the Green (Ecologist) Party, said:
“We cannot sit idly by and watch this regime continue its bloody actions against democracy.”
She added: “We fully support the possible alternative in Iran.”
Among the signatories of the statement are Philippe Gosselin from the Republicans (LR) and Hervé Saulignac from the Socialist Party.
MPs who gathered outside the French National Assembly to deliver the statement emphasized its cross-party nature and, according to Jean-Pierre Brard, a former MP and member of the committee, the need for “a democratic Iran” with “neither Shahs nor mullahs.”

The Parliamentary Committee for a Democratic Iran, founded in 2008, includes MPs and senators from across the French political spectrum. It works to raise awareness about human rights in Iran and promote the establishment of a democratic system.
The MPs, reiterating the committee’s support for the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), an opposition movement in exile, warned that severe repression continues in Iran, where all dissidents and women fighting for freedom face imprisonment or the risk of death.
Just a few steps away, hundreds of portraits of Iranian citizens executed during waves of repression by the Islamic Republic were on display.
This initiative was organized by the Committee to Support Human Rights in Iran, which is currently running a campaign in France to raise awareness about executions in Iran.
Passersby and committee members walked among the portraits of those executed.

Among the attendees was a woman originally from northeastern Iran, a former political prisoner now a refugee in France. She looked carefully at the commemorative faces and said:
“We must not close our eyes. I am not afraid of this regime.”
She added: “We will stand together, hand in hand, until the fall of this regime—toward a democratic republic with separation of religion and state, and without executions.”
