International Figures Raise Alarm Over Developments in Iran
More than 3,000 prominent figures from 55 countries have signed a joint statement expressing concern over the situation in Iran and calling for urgent measures to halt political executions. The signatories include former presidents, prime ministers, ministers, lawmakers, Nobel Prize recipients, diplomats, legal experts, academics, and human rights advocates.
The statement opens with a stark assessment of the country’s current trajectory:
“Iran stands at a historic crossroads.”
According to the signatories, recent developments have heightened concerns about the future direction of the country and the treatment of political opponents.
Concerns Grow Over Executions and Mass Arrests
The declaration highlights what it describes as a new escalation in political repression, pointing to recent executions and arrests.
“We are deeply concerned by a new wave of political executions in Iran. In recent weeks, a number of prisoners have been executed for their membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran or for participating in last January’s uprising.”
The signatories further argue that authorities have used the wartime environment to intensify restrictions and suppress dissent.
“In addition, the regime has exploited the wartime atmosphere to completely shut down the internet and has arrested thousands of people. The aim is to prevent uprisings and to stop young people from joining resistance units.”
Call for Immediate International Response
The statement urges the international community, particularly the United Nations, to intervene in response to the reported increase in death sentences.
Referring to recent remarks by judicial officials, the signatories state:
“The head of the judiciary has called on judges to expedite their decisions and the issuance of death sentences. The world’s silence is unjustifiable. We call on the UN and its member states to take immediate action to halt these executions.”
They stress that global inaction could have serious consequences and argue that urgent diplomatic pressure is needed.
Support for Democratic Aspirations
The declaration also focuses on the broader political goals of the Iranian people, praising efforts aimed at securing democratic change.
“We commend the courageous struggle of the Iranian people for freedom and democracy.”
The signatories contend that public demonstrations have reflected a desire for a democratic system rather than a return to previous forms of governance.
“As demonstrated in their nationwide uprisings, the people of Iran seek a future founded on a democratic republic. They reject both the current religious dictatorship and the authoritarian rule of the Shah. The people of Iran aspire to progress, not a return to the past.”
Future of Iran Should Be Decided by Iranians
A key theme of the statement is that political change must come from within Iran and be determined solely by its citizens.
“Regime change in Iran, with its far-reaching implications for global peace and security, particularly in the Middle East, can only be achieved by the Iranian people and their organized resistance. Determining the country’s political future remains exclusively the right and responsibility of the Iranian people.”
The signatories describe self-determination as essential to any lasting political transition.
NCRI Transition Proposal Receives Backing
The statement also voices support for a transition framework proposed by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), which outlines a temporary government and a roadmap toward elections.
“We welcome the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI)’s announcement of a provisional government tasked with organizing free elections within maximum six months to transfer sovereignty to the people and to establish a democratic republic based on Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan.”
The proposal includes commitments to civil liberties, separation of religion and state, gender equality, abolition of capital punishment, autonomy rights for oppressed nationalities within a unified Iran, and a non-nuclear future.
The statement notes:
“It merits our full support and has already been endorsed by more than 4,000 legislators on both sides of the Atlantic.”
Emphasis on a Peaceful Democratic Transition
According to the declaration, the NCRI advocates a transition process led by Iranians without foreign military involvement or external financial backing.
“The NCRI, as the oldest democratic and independent coalition in Iran, has consistently affirmed that it seeks neither financial assistance nor the presence of foreign forces on Iranian soil.”
It further states that the coalition is committed to:
“facilitating a peaceful transfer of power to the Iranian people through free and fair elections within six months of the regime’s fall.”
Broad Coalition Encouraged
In the concluding section, the signatories endorse efforts to unite democratic opposition groups around a common political platform.
“We also welcome the NCRI’s call for the formation of a solidarity front that brings together all political forces committed to overthrowing the regime and establishing a republic based on the separation of religion and state.”
Bringing together more than 3,000 political leaders, lawmakers, legal scholars, academics, and human rights advocates, the statement stands as one of the largest international appeals on Iran in recent years, focusing on ending political executions and supporting a democratic future shaped by the Iranian people themselves.
