Rome, July 16, 2026 – Senator Giulio Terzi, former Italian Foreign Minister, addressed an international conference titled “Iran’s Crisis: The Democratic Path Forward,” which was held at the Regina Hall of the Italian Parliament, urging European governments to adopt a principled and resolute policy toward Iran while expressing support for the Iranian people’s struggle for democracy.
Speaking after NCRI President-elect Maryam Rajavi and senior Italian parliamentary officials, Terzi described Iran as a nation with a rich democratic heritage that has been suppressed by the current ruling establishment. He presented Mrs. Rajavi as a symbol of hope and confidence for many Iranians seeking freedom and democratic change.
Terzi argued that Europe must recognize the nature of the Iranian regime and replace years of engagement and appeasement with a policy based on determination and clear principles. According to his remarks, Tehran has expanded instability across the Middle East while creating consequences that extend to global trade, energy security, and economic stability.

He also referred to the 1988 massacre of political prisoners, stating that around 30,000 prisoners were executed following Ayatollah Khomeini’s fatwa. Terzi maintained that the regime has continued to rely on terrorism as an instrument of foreign policy, pointing to the 2018 attempted bombing of the Free Iran gathering near Paris involving an Iranian diplomat. He argued that European countries should not tolerate political pressure or interference from Iranian embassies.
Concluding his address, Terzi praised the perseverance of the Iranian Resistance and said its experience offered valuable lessons for shaping a foreign and security policy capable of countering extremism, violence, and regional destabilization. He called on Europe to align its policies with the aspirations of the Iranian people for freedom, peace, and democracy.
