“We all know these are difficult times for Iranians. The pandemic has wreaked havoc and the sham presidential election, which was loudly boycotted by the Iranian people, proves once more that the regime cannot be trusted.
The international community must respond adequately and hold Raisi it to account for his past and future actions. The European Union itself has tools at his disposal for this, and we should make use of it. Raisi’s rise to power is a direct consequence of the international community’s appeasement towards Iran.
It is another proof that, much like what we have seen over the past 40 years, this regime is incapable of reforms. The right policy should not just focus on the regime’s nuclear weapons program but also its ballistic missile program, its sponsoring of terrorism, its regional malign influence, and its human rights violations.
All these elements should be part of a coherent and comprehensive policy towards the regime. The European Union and the international community should stand with the people of Iran in their quest for freedom”.
