Forty-seven political prisoners in Urmia Central Prison in northwest Iran went on hunger strike after being transferred to a high-security ward.
The high-security ward lacks basic facilities and is very small. It has been designed to torture and harass political prisoners.
The warden seeks to isolate the transferred inmates from other political prisoners. Urmia Central Prison is one of the most notorious prisons in Iran.
The prison’s authorities often torture prisoners and force them into false confessions. The prison is also low on hygiene and has a high Covid-19 death rate.
