A Case Study in Iran's Criminal Judiciary System: The Trial and Execution of Majid Reza Rahnavard
Young protester Majidreza Rahnavard, 23, in hanged in public in Mashhad on December 12, 2022

Iran’s regime executed Majid Reza Rahnavard (Majidreza Rahnavard), 23, in Mashhad on December 12, 2022. He was arrested on November 19 during the nationwide protests that began in September. He was accused of killing two members of the Basij in Mashhad on November 17.

The only evidence the court showed was a blurry video of a stabbing scene. The regime removed all security footage showing Basij members attacking civilians at the time of the incident.

During his trial, the only witnesses who testified were regime sympathizers and Basij members.Rahnavard was beaten and tortured to make incriminating confessions.

He was denied access to a lawyer of his choosing. Rahnavard was sentenced to death on charges of “Moharebeh” (enmity against God).

Majid Reza was hanged in public on December 12, just 23 days after his arrest. Authorities only informed his family of his execution after secretly burying him in Behesht-e Reza cemetery.

Iran’s regime executed Majid Reza to cause public fear and stop the ongoing uprisings. But this criminal execution only underlines the Iranian people’s right to self-defense. And the international community’s duty to cut all ties with this regime.
