International Outcry Grows Over Death Sentences for PMOI Supporters in Iran

The recent death sentences handed down to supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) have sparked widespread international condemnation and calls for urgent action.

On September 21, 2024, Romanian parliamentarians issued a statement calling for immediate action against the death sentences, urging the international community to intervene. This follows similar appeals from various organizations and political figures worldwide.

The Dutch Group of Friends of a Free Iran has joined the growing international chorus, calling for urgent action to halt political executions in Iran. The group emphasized the need for immediate intervention to prevent these executions and protect human rights in Iran.

The Nordic Committee for Human Rights in Iran has joined the chorus of international voices, urging immediate action to halt the executions of Iranian political prisoners. The committee emphasized the urgency of the situation and called for a coordinated international response to pressure the Iranian regime.

Canadian MP Judy Sgro has also spoken out, urging the United Nations to intervene in the cases of Iranian political prisoners facing death sentences. Sgro highlighted the importance of international pressure in safeguarding human rights in Iran and preventing these executions.

The International Committee in Search of Justice (ISJ) released a statement condemning the death sentences of two political prisoners in Iran. The ISJ, a Brussels-based NGO, expressed deep concern over the sentences given to Mohammad Ghobadlou and Mohammad Boroughani, emphasizing the lack of due process and the use of torture to extract confessions.

Hands Off Cain, an international organization dedicated to abolishing the death penalty, strongly condemned the sentences, emphasizing the urgent need for global intervention to prevent these executions.

The Australian Supporters of Democracy in Iran raised alarm over the situation, highlighting the broader human rights implications of these sentences. Meanwhile, the German Solidarity Committee for a Free Iran issued a statement expressing deep concern over the fate of the PMOI supporters.

Inside Iran, political prisoners in Ghezel Hesar Prison have also voiced their opposition to the death sentences, demonstrating solidarity with their fellow inmates.

One of the condemned, Behrouz Ehsani, managed to send a message from inside prison on September 20, shedding light on the conditions faced by political prisoners and reaffirming his commitment to his beliefs despite the dire circumstances.

These developments come in the wake of Iran’s regime upholding the death sentence of another PMOI supporter for the third time, indicating a pattern of harsh treatment towards political dissidents.

The international community’s response to these sentences highlights growing concerns over Iran’s human rights record and the use of capital punishment against political opponents. As pressure mounts, many are calling for diplomatic interventions and sanctions to compel Iran to reconsider these sentences and improve its human rights practices.

This situation continues to evolve, with human rights organizations and governments worldwide closely monitoring developments and considering further actions to address this critical issue.
