Iran: Hunger Strikes in 41 Prisons Mark Week 67 of “No to Execution Tuesdays” Amid Surge in Executions

No to Executions Tuesdays Campaign Across Iran’s Prisons – The Week 67

On Tuesday, May 6, 2025, the 67th week of the “No to Executions Tuesdays” Campaign was marked by widespread hunger strikes across 41 prisons in Iran. This protest coincides with the execution of at least 29 prisoners and the fatal shooting of a civilian, signaling what the Campaign describes as the regime’s intensified reliance on executions as its main method of repression.

According to the Campaign’s latest statement, the week saw the hanging of 15 prisoners on April 30 and another 9 on May 4. These executions raise the total number carried out by the regime since the start of 2025 to at least 154. In addition to these executions, a citizen named Azim Farrokhvand was shot and killed by government forces in Dezful, during a protest against the execution of two detainees. The Campaign identifies Farrokhvand as the first martyr of the “No to Execution” movement and honors his memory.

The Campaign strongly condemned the regime’s continued use of capital punishment, stating:

“In the hands of this tyranny, the weapon of execution is more dangerous than any other.”

Warning of a broader pattern of repression, the Campaign emphasized that the Iranian regime, cornered by both internal crises and international pressure, is wielding executions as a desperate tactic to suppress dissent and prevent potential uprisings. It has urged international human rights organizations to pressure their respective governments to condition diplomatic and economic relations with Iran on the abolition of the death penalty.

In its weekly message, the Campaign also called upon all sectors of society to stand in solidarity and amplify the collective voice against state executions.

As part of the coordinated protest, prisoners in the following 41 facilities launched hunger strikes:
