The 72nd Week of No to Execution Tuesdays Sees Hunger Strikes in 47 Prisons Across Iran

Hunger Strikes Across 47 Prisons Mark the 72nd Week of No to Execution Tuesdays

Iran’s No to Execution Tuesdays Campaign Enters Its 72nd Week with Growing Prisoner Protests

With the addition of Ahar Prison, the “No to Executions Tuesdays” campaign now spans 47 prisons across Iran. On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, the campaign marked its seventy-second consecutive week, with prisoners in these facilities protesting the alarming increase in executions by staging hunger strikes.

Since May 22, 2025 (the start of Khordad), over 90 people have been executed, including a staggering 16 in a single day on June 2. Among those, 8 were held in Qezel Hesar Prison. The campaign’s statement emphasizes that the death penalty fundamentally violates the right to life, as enshrined in Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 6 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

This resurgence of repression and extrajudicial executions—especially targeting Iranian and Afghan citizens—has drawn strong condemnation from the campaign. It calls urgently on international and human rights organizations to intervene and halt this wave of injustice.

The campaign reiterates its unwavering opposition to the death penalty, grounded in international legal standards and the inherent dignity of every human being. It highlights the systemic denial of fair trials under Iran’s authoritarian regime, where defendants face coerced confessions and lack independent legal representation, resulting in extrajudicial executions.

Executions used as tools of political repression violate principles of justice and proportionality, perpetuating cycles of violence and injustice. The campaign demands an immediate stop to all death sentences and urges global solidarity to defend the right to life.

Ahar Prison

Notably, prisoners in Ahar Prison have joined the campaign as of last week, committing to hunger strikes every Tuesday alongside their fellow inmates nationwide.
