Iran Regime Upholds Death Sentence for PMOI Supporter Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani

Iran’s regime upholds death sentence for political prisoner Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani

On October 4, 2025, Iran’s Supreme Court affirmed the death sentence against Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani (orVafa’i Thani), a supporter of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), according to a statement published by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).

Vafaei-Sani, aged 30 and formerly a boxing champion and coach in Mashhad, was arrested in March 2020 in Mashhad. The NCRI alleges that he has been subjected to severe physical and psychological torture while in detention. In September 2024, he was sentenced to death for the third time by judges Saadi Makan and Yazdan-Khah.

His lawyer, via a post on the social media platform X, criticized the judgment, saying: “The death sentence of Mr. Mohammad Javad Vafaei-Sani … despite numerous legal flaws, was affirmed by Branch 9 of the Supreme Court.”

The NCRI is urging the United Nations and relevant international bodies to intervene immediately to save his life and those of other political prisoners on death row.
