The ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ campaign has reached its 105th consecutive week, entering its third year of protest against executions in Iran. This week, Gorgan Prison joined the campaign, bringing the total number of participating prisons to 56 across the country. Prisoners condemned the ongoing wave of executions and warned of harsh consequences for detainees arrested during the nationwide uprising.
In solidarity with the Iranian people, prisoners announced a hunger strike on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, to protest death sentences and systemic state violence.
Honoring the Martyrs of the January Uprising
The campaign’s statement paid tribute to those who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom, particularly the martyrs of the Dey 1404 (January 2026) uprising, describing the nationwide protests as a historic moment that shook the foundations of the ruling regime.
Prisoners emphasized that the government’s brutal response has exposed its fascist nature, and the bloodshed has sparked global outrage. UN Special Rapporteur Mai Sato called the regime’s actions a “crime against humanity”, while the European Parliament and UN Human Rights Council have issued unprecedented condemnations.
Escalating Executions Across the Country
During Dey (December 22, 2025 – January 20, 2026), more than 355 people were executed. In early Bahman, over 50 additional prisoners, including prisoners of conscience Amanj Karvanchi and Arsalan Sheikhi, were executed. Executions are now reported beyond prisons, extending to streets, hospitals, detention centers, and private homes.
Overcrowded Prisons and Detention Centers
Reports indicate a surge of newly arrested protesters and wounded individuals transferred to prisons:
-
Sheiban Prison in Ahvaz allocated new wards to hundreds of detainees.
-
Karaj Central Prison cleared halls for new arrivals.
-
Qezel Hesar Prison received detainees from Tehran Penitentiary.
-
Detention centers such as Meghdad are filled with arrested youths.
Prisoners warned of potential heavy sentences, abuse, and executions for these detainees.
Warning of Secret Killings
The statement cautioned that authorities might secretly execute detainees, transfer bodies to facilities like Kahrizak, and falsely report them as street casualties.
Coordinated Hunger Strike in 56 Prisons
Prisoners announced a hunger strike on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, in 56 prisons across Iran, including Evin, Qezel Hesar, Greater Tehran Penitentiary, Adel Abad Shiraz, Sheiban and Sepidar Ahvaz, Dizel Abad Kermanshah, Urmia, Tabriz, Sanandaj, and Gorgan Prison, among others.
