The Iranian regime has executed two political prisoners affiliated with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) in a move condemned by Iranian Resistance leader and human rights advocates.

According to a statement issued on March 30, 2026, by the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the executions took place at dawn in Ghezel Hesar Prison. The victims were identified as Akbar (Shahrokh) Daneshvarkar, 58, and Mohammad Taghavi, 59.

Taghavi had a long history as a political prisoner, reportedly facing persecution since the 1980s and 1990s. He was arrested again in 2020 for alleged links to the PMOI, served three years in prison, and was re-arrested in March 2024. Daneshvarkar, a civil engineer, had been detained earlier in January 2024.

Both men were allegedly subjected to severe torture during detention in Ward 209 of Evin Prison, a facility widely criticized by rights groups. In December 2024, Branch 26 of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court sentenced them to death on charges of “baghi” (armed rebellion), a ruling later upheld by the regime’s Supreme Court.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the NCRI, strongly condemned the executions, describing them as a “barbaric act.” She argued that the Iranian regime carried out the executions out of fear of growing domestic unrest, warning that such actions would only intensify opposition among Iranian youth and resistance groups.

Mrs. Rajavi also accused the authorities of using external conflicts as a distraction from internal crises, asserting that such measures would not prevent the regime’s eventual downfall.

She called on the United Nations and its member states to move beyond verbal condemnation and take concrete action. “The international community’s inaction has emboldened further executions,” she said, emphasizing that many political prisoners linked to the PMOI remain on death row.

The NCRI urged immediate global intervention to prevent further executions, warning of escalating human rights violations.
