Global Outcry Over Execution of PMOI Members

April 3, 2026 – A wave of international condemnation has erupted following the execution of four political prisoners affiliated with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK)—Mohammad Taghavi, Akbar Daneshvarkar, Babak Alipour, and Pouya Ghobadi—who were executed on March 30 and 31 in Ghezel Hesar Prison after what sources described as unfair trials, torture, and forced confessions.

Governments, lawmakers, human rights organizations, and political groups across the world have strongly denounced the executions, calling them arbitrary and demanding urgent international action to halt further killings.

Condemnations by Iranian Opposition and Political Groups

Numerous Iranian opposition parties and organizations condemned the executions, describing them as crimes against humanity and part of a broader pattern of systematic repression.

The Left Party of Iran denounced the executions as a continuation of decades-long human rights violations and described the death penalty as a tool of political terror. The Baluchestan People’s Party and Baluchestan Ajoyi Zarmbesh condemned the killings as “savage,” warning that those responsible would be held accountable.

Kurdish political organizations—including the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan, Komala Zahmatkeshan Kurdistan, PJAK, the Kurdistan Freedom Party (PAK), and the Union of Revolutionaries of Kurdistan, along with the YariKord Organization—issued joint statements condemning the executions and calling for their immediate halt.

Other groups, including Comprehensive Solidarity for Freedom and Equality in Iran and the Organization Khebat of Kurdistan Iran, also strongly condemned the executions, linking them to the regime’s fear of popular uprisings.

Human Rights Organizations and NGOs React

Major international human rights organizations voiced strong opposition to the executions. Amnesty International condemned the killings as arbitrary executions carried out after grossly unfair trials involving torture and forced confessions.

The Nordic Committee of Friends of a Free Iran and the Dutch Friends of a Free Iran group jointly denounced the executions and warned of the risks faced by other prisoners.

The Italian Federation for Human Rights and the “Nessuno Tocchi Caino” (Hands Off Cain) association sent urgent appeals to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the UN Special Rapporteur, calling for immediate intervention and pressure on Iranian authorities.

Iran Human Rights (IHR) also condemned the executions, stressing that ongoing regional developments must not overshadow human rights abuses inside Iran.

Officials and Lawmakers Call for Action

A number of current and former international officials strongly condemned the executions.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani described the executions as a sign of the regime’s fear of internal opposition. Former European Parliament Vice-President Alejo Vidal-Quadras condemned what he called a “murderous dictatorship.”

Former U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, along with current U.S. Representatives Brad Sherman and Laura Friedman, and Members of the European Parliament such as Petras Auštrevičius and Milan Zver, formally condemned the executions. Friedman specifically denounced the regime’s opportunistic brutality and called for concrete measures to support Iranian civilians seeking freedom.

In the United Kingdom, Jim Shannon MP condemned the executions and called for urgent international attention and action.

In addition, the British Committee for Iran Freedom (BCFIF), composed of UK parliamentarians and political figures, strongly condemned the executions. The committee called on the UK Government to hold the Iranian regime accountable to prevent further massacres of pro-democracy dissidents. They emphasized that the four executed PMOI members were subjected to grossly unfair trials, torture, and denied contact with their families, and warned of the imminent risk to two other men sentenced in the same case. Norwegian politician Ola Elvestuen called on governments worldwide to take immediate action and support the Iranian people’s demands for freedom.

Warnings Over Imminent Risk to Other Prisoners

Alongside the condemnations, multiple organizations and officials warned that additional political prisoners remain at imminent risk of execution.

At least 16 other prisoners linked to the same case are reportedly facing possible execution, including Vahid Bani Amerian and Abolhassan Montazer. Advocacy groups and international figures have issued urgent calls to prevent further executions.

Global Protests and Calls for Accountability

The executions have also sparked protests in multiple cities worldwide, including Vienna, Berlin, Stockholm, Washington, Oslo, and Melbourne, where demonstrators called for an end to executions in Iran.

Participants in these protests demanded concrete international measures, including increased pressure on Iranian authorities and accountability for those responsible.

Across statements from political leaders, human rights organizations, and activists, a unified message has emerged: the executions must be condemned, investigated, and stopped, and immediate action is required to prevent further loss of life.
