Lawmakers call for tougher sanctions, an end to executions, and accountability for human rights abuses in Iran
The European Parliament has overwhelmingly adopted a strong resolution condemning the Iranian regime’s ongoing repression, executions, and human rights violations, according to the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).
The resolution expresses solidarity with the Iranian people and their struggle for freedom, democracy, and human rights. It strongly condemns the secret executions carried out in March and April 2026 and warns that the scale of repression in Iran may amount to crimes against humanity.

Among the key demands of the resolution are an immediate halt to all executions in Iran and the unconditional release of political prisoners. Members of the European Parliament also called for expanded EU sanctions against Iranian officials and entities involved in repression, including the judiciary, prison authorities, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and institutions linked to the Supreme Leader. The proposed measures include asset freezes and travel bans.
The resolution further urges the closure of Iranian diplomatic missions involved in transnational repression and calls for stronger enforcement of sanctions. European lawmakers also emphasized the importance of pursuing universal jurisdiction so Iranian officials accused of abuses can face prosecution in European courts.
In addition, the European Parliament condemned internet shutdowns imposed by Iranian authorities and urged the European Union and partner countries to support secure internet access for the Iranian people. Lawmakers stressed that human rights, accountability, and the release of political prisoners must remain central to any future engagement with Tehran.
The NCRI report noted that the resolution reflects broad cross-party concern within the European Parliament over the deteriorating human rights situation in Iran and the regime’s extensive use of the death penalty to suppress dissent and political activism.
