Austria’s five parliamentary parties have issued a joint appeal calling on Iranian authorities to immediately halt the execution of protesters arrested in connection with the January 8–9 protests.

Foreign policy spokespersons from the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ), the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP), the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), NEOS and the Greens have spoken with one voice in opposing executions linked to the protests.

In their joint statement, the representatives stressed that “no one should be executed for demanding freedom and fundamental rights.”

The Austrian lawmakers also called on Tehran to ensure fair-trial standards for those arrested and to allow independent international observers access to the proceedings.

The joint appeal represents a rare display of unity among Austria’s major political parties on the issue of executions in Iran, with representatives from across the political spectrum urging the Iranian government to respect fundamental rights and due-process guarantees.
