Tuesday, September 22, 2026 — In the 139th consecutive week of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign, prisoners in 64 prisons across Iran staged a hunger strike on Tuesday, September 22, protesting the issuance and implementation of death sentences and reaffirming their opposition to the death penalty.
With the participation of Bandar Abbas Prison and Ziabar Prison in Somesar, Gilan Province, the number of prisons taking part in the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign has reached 64.
The ongoing protest comes amid continued security pressure, threats, restrictions on communication with the outside world, and punitive measures against participating prisoners.
Despite these pressures, participants have continued the campaign, staging weekly hunger strikes to emphasize their opposition to the death penalty and their defense of the right to life.
After 139 consecutive weeks, and with participation expanding to 64 prisons, the campaign represents an ongoing organized protest inside Iranian prisons against the issuance and implementation of death sentences. The movement has continued for nearly three years despite security pressure and restrictions imposed on prisoners, with its participation continuing to expand.
No to Execution Tuesdays: The Voice of Prisons Against Executions and Repression
In its statement this week, the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign said that it has entered a broader phase as reports continue to document executions and the issuance of death sentences in Iran.
The campaign pointed to the recent confirmation of death sentences for Mohammadreza Majidi-Asl in Tehran and Omid Goudarzvand Chegini at Choobindar Prison in Qazvin. Both prisoners were arrested during the Dey 1404 protests and are reportedly at immediate risk of execution.
The campaign also said that a death sentence has been issued against Omidreza Heydari, a 19-year-old student from Izeh.
According to reports cited by the campaign, Reza[v]an Asgharzadeh, a 45-year-old woman and mother of six, was executed at Dastgerd Prison in Isfahan on drug-related charges.
The execution of a mother has once again drawn attention to the human and social consequences of the death penalty and to concerns over discrimination and violence against women in Iran.
Two More Prisons Join the Hunger Strike
The campaign also highlighted the participation of two additional prisons: Bandar Abbas Prison and Ziabar Prison in Somesar, Gilan Province.
With their participation, the number of prisons involved in the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign has reached 64.
According to figures cited by the campaign, at least 448 executions have been recorded in Iran since the beginning of 1405.
The campaign said that the scale of executions has also drawn international attention.
Amnesty International, in its recent report on the crackdown on the 2022 protests, named 87 Iranian officials for consideration in criminal investigations into their possible roles in crimes related to the suppression of those protests.
The European Parliament has also expressed concern over the crackdown, the execution of protesters, and the situation of prisoners in Iran, emphasizing the need to respect fundamental rights and the right to life.
