European Parliament Urges UN Security Council to Refer Iran’s Regime to the International Criminal Court

European Parliament urges ICC referral over Iran’s human rights violations.

On Thursday, October 8, the European Parliament adopted a resolution condemning human rights violations in Iran and the execution of protesters from the uprising, with 541 votes in favor, 11 against, and 25 abstentions.

The resolution calls for the immediate annulment of all death sentences and the unconditional release of all political prisoners.

Expressing deep concern over the growing number of women sentenced to death on fabricated security-related charges, the resolution strongly condemns the death sentences handed down to Taraneh Rahimi, Leila Abolhosseini, and other individuals facing execution, and calls for an end to all executions.

Expressing its abhorrence of institutionalized gender discrimination under Iran’s regime and condemning the regime’s widespread violations of human rights and women’s rights, the resolution calls on EU member states to launch investigations under the principle of universal jurisdiction to hold Iranian officials accountable for gross human rights violations and to end systemic impunity. It also calls on the United Nations Security Council to refer Iran’s regime to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

The resolution also condemns the Iranian regime’s persecution of all religious and ethnic minorities, including Kurds, Baluchis, Arabs, Azerbaijanis, Bahá’ís, Sunni Muslims, Jews, Zoroastrians, and Christians.
