“No to Execution Tuesdays” Campaign Continues in 66 Prisons Across Iran in Its 142nd Week

Prisoners in 66 Iranian prisons continue the “No to Execution Tuesdays” hunger strike in its 142nd consecutive week.
Prisoners in 66 Iranian prisons continue the “No to Execution Tuesdays” hunger strike in its 142nd consecutive week.

The statement of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign for its 142nd week was issued on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, announcing that Gina Romero, the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, had joined the campaign in solidarity.

At Least 2,230 People Executed in Iran in the Past Year

Recalling that Saturday, October 10, was the World Day Against the Death Penalty, the statement said that the day was marked amid a devastating rise in executions in Iran.

“At least 2,230 people have been executed in Iran between October 2025 and October 2026, including 54 women, 47 political prisoners, and four children,” the statement said.

“These figures tell the story of lives lost, grieving families, and a society confronted every day with the fear of death and repression.”

Political Prisoner Amirhossein Akbari Monfared Faces Imminent Execution

This week, the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence against Amirhossein Akbari Monfared, a 23-year-old political prisoner and university student, placing his life in greater danger than ever.

The continued issuance and confirmation of death sentences underscore the grave threat facing political prisoners and young people in Iran.

Teenager Found Dead After Arrest as Reports of Torture and Repression Mount

The campaign’s statement also condemned what it described as extreme repression and violence by the authorities.

Omid Ghanouni, a 17-year-old teenager, was arrested in the city of Khansar in Isfahan Province. The following day, his body was handed over to his family, with visible signs of blows and injuries.

In a similar case, another citizen, Farid Makari, was arrested in Mashhad and died after reportedly being subjected to extensive torture.

During the past week, the authorities also executed political prisoner Jaber Khosravi in Damghan and Omar Dorostaran, a Baloch citizen.

Furthermore, the recent issuance of a death sentence against Ali Zakani, a 19-year-old political prisoner, is another example of the ever-present threat of the gallows hanging over the lives of people sentenced to death in what the campaign describes as the regime’s sham courts.

UN Special Rapporteur Gina Romero Joins the Campaign

This week, Gina Romero, the UN Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, expressed her support for and solidarity with the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign.

Her support is a significant source of encouragement for prisoners who continue to stand up for human dignity under the threat of execution.

The campaign’s members welcomed this solidarity as a reminder of the importance of international support for prisoners resisting the death penalty and systematic repression.

Campaign Calls for Urgent International Action to Stop Executions

Members of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign, who have raised their voices for 142 consecutive weeks, declared:

“We, the members of the ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ campaign, who have been raising our voices for 142 consecutive weeks, declaring that no human being should become a victim of the gallows, call on all awakened human consciences, international organizations, and human rights defenders to go beyond verbal condemnations and take immediate, practical action to establish a mechanism to halt executions in Iran.

“In these dark days of repression, do not leave the people of Iran alone.”

The campaign continues to call for coordinated international action to end executions and protect the lives of prisoners facing death sentences.
