Iran: Protests Break Out in Khuzestan Due To Skyrocketing Rise in Prices, Especially of Bread

May 8, 2022: The secretariat of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) issued a statement in regard to the protests in Khuzestan province on astronomical rise in prices, especially of bread.

The full text of the statement as follows:

On Friday and Saturday evening, May 6 and 7, 2022, the enraged people of Khuzestan Province (southwest Iran), including in Ahvaz, Izeh, Baghmalek, and Susangerd, took to the streets in protest against the skyrocketing prices of essential goods, especially the astronomical rise in the price of bread.

In Ahvaz, people first held sporadic protest rallies in different parts of the city and then marched to the city center Friday evening.

In the city of Izeh, people took to the streets on Friday night, chanting “Khamenei is a murderer, his reign is illegitimate,” and “Death to Raisi.” Protesters in Izeh seized a warehouse belonging to Khamenei’s mafia, where flour was being hoarded.

Frightened by the escalation of protests, the regime deployed its repressive IRGC, Basij, security, and intelligence forces and cut off the Internet in most cities of Khuzestan. However, on Saturday evening, people in Izeh and some other places took to the streets for the second night running.

In another development, on Saturday, May 7, ranchers in different cities, including Qazvin, Qom, Shiraz, Mashhad, Shahroud, Kerman, Isfahan, Yazd, and Arak, staged a rally outside the provincial agriculture department. They were protesting the high cost of livestock feed and goods and the officials’ disregard for their needs. The banner carried by the Shiraz cattle ranchers read: “Qalibaf (regime parliament speaker), Raisi, this is the final warning. The bankrupt cattle ranchers are ready to revolt.”

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) in this regard said: “The criminal mullahs stole even bread from the people’s tables, a disaster for Iran workers.”

“The price of pasta that people had substituted for the expensive rice has multiplied several folds. The Iranian people and the Resistance Units will soon uproot the mullahs’ regime.”
