Throughout 2024, Iranian communities across Europe, North America, and Australia actively organized events to protest human rights violations in Iran and advocate for regime change, freedom, and democracy. These gatherings, led by supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), included demonstrations, exhibitions, and cultural events, highlighting the global solidarity of the Iranian diaspora in their fight against oppression.
The Grand Rally of Free Iran in Berlin
One of the most significant events of the year was the Grand Rally of Free Iran 2024, held on June 29 in Berlin. Thousands of Iranian expatriates and supporters of democracy gathered in the German capital to demand an end to the Iranian regime’s human rights abuses and to call for international support for the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom. The rally featured prominent speakers, including politicians, human rights activists, and representatives of the Iranian Resistance, all emphasizing the need for a secular, democratic Iran.
This large-scale demonstration captured international attention, with participants highlighting the regime’s widespread repression, particularly against women and minority groups, and calling for accountability for its crimes. The event also served as a powerful message of unity and determination among Iranians abroad, further galvanizing their efforts to keep global attention focused on Iran’s plight.
Demonstrations and Protests
In addition to the Berlin rally, Iranian expatriates held numerous demonstrations throughout the year in cities across Europe, the US, Canada, and Australia. These protests condemned the Iranian regime’s oppression and highlighted its human rights violations.
Notably, protests took place in Geneva, as well as in German cities like Hamburg, Cologne, Düsseldorf, Munich, Stuttgart, and Vienna, Austria.
Weekly gatherings were held in Swedish cities such as Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö, and Oslo, Norway, in support of political prisoners in Iran and to denounce executions and human rights abuses. These demonstrations also expressed solidarity with the MEK and Mrs. Maryam Rajavi‘s ten-point plan for a free and democratic Iran.
In Canada, protests were prominent in cities like Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal, where the Iranian diaspora voiced their opposition to the regime’s actions.
Additionally, in New York, a major protest was held against Masoud Pezeshkian, the Iranian regime’s appointed president by Khamenei, who is seen as lacking legitimacy.
In Washington, DC, rallies in front of the White House called for a change in U.S. policy towards Iran and the recognition of the Iranian people’s right to resist and establish a democratic system.
Cultural Exhibitions and Events
Cultural events played a significant role in raising awareness about the situation in Iran. Throughout 2024, exhibitions were held in Paris and Berlin, the two cities hosting the majority of the events, followed by cities in Switzerland such as Zurich, Bern, Aarau, Lucerne, Lugano, St. Gallen, Basel , and Geneva.
