Remembering Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh and Condemning the August 19 Coup

Gothenburg, Sweden – August 22, 2026: Supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) gathered in Gothenburg to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh, the leader of Iran’s national movement, on the anniversary of the August 19, 1953, coup that overthrew his democratically elected government. Participants condemned the collaboration of the Shah, the clerics, and colonialism in carrying out the August 19 coup and reaffirmed their opposition to dictatorship in all its forms.

Honoring Resistance Members and Victims of the January 2026 Uprising

The gathering also honored the memory of Nasrin (Akram) Shahrabi and Mozhgan Mahdavi, members of the PMOI’s Central Council who recently passed away following illness. Participants also commemorated Shahram Sadeghi and Ghaem Hosseini, two political prisoners and protesters from Iran’s January 2026 nationwide uprising who, according to the organizers, were recently executed by the Iranian authorities.

The event highlighted the Iranian regime’s continuing human rights violations, including the execution of political prisoners and protesters arrested during the January 2026 nationwide uprising. According to figures released by the PMOI, thousands of protesters were killed during the regime’s crackdown on the nationwide protests.

Calls for an End to Executions and the Release of Political Prisoners

Participants called for an immediate halt to the execution of political prisoners and protesters arrested during the January 2026 uprising. They demanded the annulment of all death sentences and the immediate and unconditional release of political prisoners and detained protesters.

Speakers stressed that the Iranian people’s struggle for freedom and democracy has continued despite decades of political repression, executions, and violence. They also drew attention to the activities of the Resistance Units inside Iran, which the PMOI describes as an organized network opposing the clerical regime.

The participants rejected both the former Shah’s monarchy and the current clerical dictatorship, emphasizing that Iran’s future should be determined by its people rather than by another form of dictatorship.

The gathering concluded with calls for the establishment of a democratic republic in Iran based on the Ten-Point Plan proposed by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI).
