On the 58th anniversary of Dr. Mohammad Mossadegh’s passing, members of the MEK Resistance Units held commemorative activities in multiple Iranian cities. Mossadegh, Iran’s democratically elected prime minister and a symbol of national sovereignty, led the nationalization of the country’s oil industry before being overthrown in the 1953 coup orchestrated by the Shah’s regime with foreign backing. Decades later, his legacy remains deeply embedded in the collective memory of the Iranian people.
In Tehran, Resistance Units displayed messages paying tribute to Mossadegh’s role in securing Iran’s independence and resisting colonial rule. Banners and graffiti carried slogans such as “Mossadegh, bless your soul, your path continues” and “Our blood-soaked generation holds the torch of Kuchak Khan and Mossadegh,” reflecting the enduring commitment of Iranians to his ideals of sovereignty and freedom.

Throughout the capital, images of Dr. Mossadegh were displayed alongside those of Massoud Rajavi, the leader of the Iranian Resistance. One banner hailed Mossadegh as “a resilient and unyielding leader who taught us the first lesson of struggling against colonialism,” while another proclaimed, “Mossadegh, the manifestation of a nation’s political will for independence and freedom.”
A particularly striking quote from Mossadegh’s trial before the Shah’s court was prominently highlighted: “Where there is a matter of rights, I renounce everything. I have nothing except my homeland before my eyes.” This powerful statement, made in defiance of repression, continues to inspire those who reject both the clerical regime and monarchist rule in Iran.
Tributes to Mossadegh also appeared beyond Tehran. In cities such as Lahijan, Mashhad, Karaj, Rasht, Babol, and Saravan, Resistance Units displayed banners reinforcing his status as a symbol of Iran’s struggle for sovereignty. In several locations, his image was placed alongside that of Massoud Rajavi, underscoring the connection between Mossadegh’s nationalist movement and the ongoing resistance against the ruling theocracy.
A recurring slogan seen in Tehran, Babol, and Saravan condemned both Iran’s current regime and its former monarchy: “No to the mullahs, no to the Cossack (the Pahlavi regime), bless your soul Mossadegh.” This statement reflects the rejection of both the clerical dictatorship and the monarchy that once overthrew his government.
These commemorations come at a time of rising political tensions in Iran, with growing public discontent against the ruling system. The PMOI’s Resistance Units have intensified their activities, using symbolic occasions like this to rally support for their vision of a free and democratic Iran. By invoking Mossadegh’s legacy, they reaffirm their dedication to the principles of independence, justice, and self-determination that he championed.
