In the aftermath of Rouhani coming to power in Iran, the Iranian people and diaspora, hand in hand with activist and prominent figures internationally, came together in a campaign calling for the prosecution of Raisi for crimes against humanity and genocide for his role in the 1988 massacre.

- No major heads of state attended his inauguration into office out of fear for their reputation
- Raisi did not attend the UNGA out of fear of being questioned on his role in the 1988 massacre and being met with protests
- The court hearing on the 1988 massacre in Gohardasht prison taking place in Sweden, is bringing to light the role of Raisi as a member of the death commissions during the massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in summer of 1988, in what may serve as a stepping stone for his prosecution
- Raisi was to travel to Glasgow, Scotland next week to attend the COOP-26 conference, as his first international visit, but his office abruptly cancelled plans as they became aware of a formal complaint being filed for his arrest with Police Scotland for crimes against humanity
- This week, for the first time in 33 years, UN Special Rapporteur for human rights in Iran described the distressing pattern of widespread and systemic impunity in Iran both for long-standing violations such as the 1988 massacres & for recent ones such as the use of lethal force against protests in 2019- crimes in which Raisi played a direct and pivotal role.

On Thursday, October 28, 2021, a bipartisan summit will examine the impact of Ebrahim Raisi’s presidency in the defiant posture Tehran has taken vis-à-vis the nuclear talks and the continuing regional meddling. It will also deal with Raisi’s role in the 1988 massacre of 30,000 political prisoners. Speakers will put forth policy recommendations for the United States to consider in dealing with Raisi.
On the heels of the G20 summit, hundreds of Iranian American community leaders from across the United States and victims of Raisi’s crimes will join the conference in Washington, DC, to call for accountability and urge the U.S. to lead a decisive Iran policy.
