Remembering Joseph Lieberman: A Champion of Political Integrity and Support for the Iranian Resistance

Senator Joseph Lieberman’s speech at the Free Iran Global Summit, 2023

The unexpected and saddening loss of former U.S. Senator and vice-presidential contender Joseph Lieberman, who passed away at the age of 82, represents a profound void in principled leadership and patriotism within American politics. Lieberman, who dedicated nearly a quarter of a century to representing Connecticut in the Senate, leaves behind a legacy defined by principled governance, bipartisan cooperation, and steadfast dedication to his convictions.

Throughout his political journey, Lieberman achieved several significant milestones, notably becoming the first Jewish politician to be nominated on a major party U.S. presidential ticket in 2000, when Al Gore selected him as his running mate.

Lieberman’s influence extended beyond domestic affairs, reflecting a broader perspective on foreign policy. His stance on the Iranian regime distinguished him from many of his peers. His active support for the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) and the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) went beyond rhetoric, showcasing his broader commitment to global democratic principles and human rights. Lieberman’s endorsement was deeply rooted in his belief in their mission to foster change in Iran, earning him admiration and acknowledgment among fellow politicians.

Moreover, Lieberman’s involvement with the Iranian resistance movement highlighted his grasp of Iran’s strategic significance in Middle Eastern geopolitics and the global battle against religious tyranny and extremism. By aligning himself with the NCRI and PMOI/MEK, he conveyed a resolute message about the United States’ dedication to supporting democratic endeavors and opposing oppressive regimes. This alignment also underscored his foresight in recognizing the potential of the Iranian opposition to shape Iran’s future trajectory. His proactive engagement included participation in international forums, interactions with opposition figures, and utilizing his platform to spotlight the struggles of those advocating for freedom in Iran.

In addition, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), conveyed her heartfelt condolences on the passing of Senator Lieberman. She emphasized Lieberman’s significant contributions, stating, “America lost a great politician and a true democrat, and the Iranian resistance lost a great supporter.”

Mrs. Rajavi praised Lieberman’s unwavering advocacy for decisive policies against the religious fascism ruling Iran and his longstanding support for the Iranian Resistance. She highlighted Lieberman’s efforts to assist the MEK in Ashraf and Liberty in Iraq, ensuring their security and safe transfer under challenging circumstances. Mrs. Rajavi expressed her deepest sympathies to Lieberman’s family, friends, and the American public, noting that the thoughts and prayers of the resistance, particularly the MEK in Ashraf 3, are with Lieberman’s wife, Hadassah, during these difficult times.
