US House Resolution 1148 Denounces Iran’s Regime Terrorism and Backs Iranian Resistance for Regional Stability

In a notable display of bipartisan cooperation, 223 members of the United States House of Representatives, from both the Democratic and Republican parties, have endorsed Resolution 1148. This resolution condemns the Iranian regime’s involvement in terrorism, regional proxy conflicts, and internal repression, while expressing strong support for the Iranian Resistance. It underscores the escalating threat posed by Iran since October 2023 and calls for decisive international measures.

Key Points of the Resolution:

1-Condemnation of Regional Destabilization: The resolution unequivocally condemns the Iranian regime’s actions that have contributed to terrorism and instability in the Middle East, particularly emphasizing the regime’s involvement since the October 7, 2023 attacks.

2-Support for Iranian Protesters: It affirms the right of Iranian protesters to demand fundamental changes within Iran, noting that addressing these calls contributes to regional and global security.

3-Recognition of Political Self-Determination: The resolution acknowledges and supports the Iranian people’s inherent right to determine their political future, as articulated in the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

4-Accountability for Iranian Regime: The House calls for continued sanctions against Iran and supports the Ten-Point Plan for the Future of Iran proposed by Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI). This plan advocates for free elections, a market economy, separation of religion and state, and a non-nuclear Iran.

5-Support for Resistance Units: The resolution urges the international community to recognize the rights of Iranian protesters and the PMOI-led Resistance Units to confront the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and other repressive forces.

6-Protection of Iranian Political Refugees: The US government is called upon to ensure the protection of Iranian political refugees in Camp Ashraf 3 in Albania, guaranteeing their rights under the Geneva Convention and the European Convention on Human Rights.

7-Advocacy for a Democratic Iran: The resolution supports the struggle of the Iranian people to establish a democratic, secular, and non-nuclear republic.

Background and Implications

Resolution 1148 responds to Iran’s increasing involvement in regional conflicts and its internal repression of dissent. It highlights significant protests in Iran during 2018, 2019, and 2022, which were sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini while in the custody of the morality police. These protests have featured widespread demands for an end to the Velayat-e Faqih (guardianship of the Islamic jurist) system and the establishment of a democratic government.

The resolution also addresses the brutal suppression of ethnic and religious minorities in Iran, including Kurds, Baluchis, Arabs, Christians, Jews, Baha’is, Zoroastrians, and Sunni Muslims. It underscores the regime’s use of terrorism and hostage diplomacy as tools of foreign policy, citing the conviction of Iranian diplomat Asadollah Assadi for a planned terror attack in Europe.

Additionally, the resolution acknowledges the historic massacres carried out by the Iranian regime, such as the 1988 execution of over 30,000 political prisoners, a crime in which current Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi played a prominent role.

The resolution has received significant international support, with over 3,600 parliamentarians and 125 former world leaders endorsing Maryam Rajavi’s Ten-Point Plan. This global backing reflects a growing consensus on the need to address the Iranian regime’s actions and support the Iranian people’s aspirations for a democratic future.

House Resolution 1148 represents a strong stance by the United States against the Iranian regime’s destabilizing activities and human rights abuses. By supporting the rights of Iranian protesters and advocating for a democratic future for Iran, the resolution aims to contribute to greater regional stability and global security.
