Amnesty International has issued an urgent appeal highlighting the imminent risk of execution faced by two Iranian political prisoners, Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani, currently held in Ghezel Hesar prison. The warning follows the Iranian Supreme Court’s rejection of their second requests for judicial review — decisions made without reviewing the full case files, according to legal representatives.

The two men were sentenced to death after what Amnesty has described as “grossly unfair trials” marred by serious human rights violations. These include credible allegations of torture and other ill-treatment to extract forced confessions. Both were reportedly subjected to a hasty five-minute hearing before a Revolutionary Court in September 2024.
Amnesty International has called on Iranian authorities to immediately halt any plans for their execution and to release them. The organization also urged the international community to take swift action to prevent further injustice.
In a February 27 statement, Amnesty stressed that the convictions and sentences were fundamentally flawed and urged Iranian authorities to ensure a fair and transparent legal process. The full report detailing the violations and context of their cases is available here.
As international concern mounts, human rights advocates continue to demand accountability and a moratorium on executions in Iran, especially in politically charged cases involving allegations of coercion and denial of fair trial rights.
