Execution of PMOI Political Prisoners in Iran: Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani Hanged

Execution of PMOI Political Prisoners, Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani in Iran

At dawn on Sunday, July 27, 2025, the Iranian regime executed two political prisoners—Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani—both members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). This execution of PMOI political prisoners in Iran is the latest act in a series of brutal crackdowns aimed at silencing dissent and opposition voices.

Unfair Trials and Brutal Torture

Behrouz Ehsani (69) was arrested in Tehran on December 6, 2022, and Mehdi Hassani (48), a father of three, was detained in Zanjan on September 11, 2022. Both were transferred to Ward 209 of Evin Prison, notorious for the torture of political detainees.

The regime charged them with “moharebeh” (waging war against God), “baghi” (armed rebellion), and “membership in PMOI.” These charges were not based on evidence of violence, but purely on their peaceful political beliefs and activism.

Their death sentences were issued by Judge Iman Afshari of Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, Branch 26, known for rubber-stamping death verdicts against dissidents. Legal procedures were grossly violated—defense lawyers were denied access to case files, and all requests for judicial review were rejected without due process.

Final Words of Defiance

Despite enduring years of torture and solitary confinement, both men refused to surrender. In his final message from prison, Behrouz Ehsani declared:

“We will never—under any circumstances—surrender to this bloodthirsty and criminal regime. Never shall we bow to humiliation.”

Maryam Rajavi’s Condemnation

Following the announcement, Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), issued a strong condemnation:

“Behrouz Ehsani and Mehdi Hassani now join the eternal ranks of those who gave their lives for freedom and justice. These executions are a desperate act by Khamenei to delay the inevitable collapse of his regime.”

She added:

“I call on the United Nations and all democratic governments to take decisive and effective action. Silence only encourages further executions. Many other PMOI political prisoners in Iran are now in grave danger.”

A Pattern of Political Killings

This execution of PMOI political prisoners in Iran is not isolated. Since the Regime’s President Masoud Pezeshkian took office in July 2024, the regime has executed over 1,400 people, showing its increasing reliance on state violence to maintain control. Human rights groups including Amnesty International and UN Special Rapporteurs have condemned this alarming trend.

Despite international appeals, the executions went ahead—exposing not only the cruelty of the regime but also the failure of global powers to stop it.

Appeasement Is Complicity

Maryam Rajavi emphasized that global silence and inaction only embolden the regime to continue its crimes. She stated:

“Continued inaction serves only to embolden this bloodthirsty regime at a moment when it is at its most vulnerable. Silence and hesitation are interpreted as a license to escalate repression and further executions. Many PMOI and other political prisoners are facing imminent execution. The international community must act with urgency and resolve to save their lives.”
