Hunger Strike in 52 Iranian Prisons
On Tuesday, September 30, 2025, prisoners in 52 prisons across Iran once again staged a hunger strike as part of the “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign.
This week’s statement honored the memory of Somayeh Rashidi, a political prisoner who died after being denied medical care. The statement declared:
“The execution of 46 people in the past week and 190 executions in the month of Shahrivar — unprecedented in the past 35 years — present a terrifying picture of the ruthless violation of human rights.”
Remembering Somayeh Rashidi
In the 88th week’s statement, campaign members expressed:
“We stand with deep sorrow and endless solidarity in remembrance of Somayeh Rashidi, a political prisoner who died due to the denial of medical care. Her unjust death is part of the policy of ‘slow execution’ of prisoners and a bitter warning about the conditions of sick inmates in the country’s prisons – prisoners who have been deprived of the most basic human rights.”
They also extended condolences to Rashidi’s family and loved ones.
Executions and Death Sentences
Alongside Rashidi’s death, the campaign highlighted recent cases:
-
The execution of Bahman Choubi Asl on espionage charges under an ambiguous judicial process (September 29, 2025).
-
The death sentences of Hamed Validi and Nima Shahi issued in the Revolutionary Court of Karaj.
-
The Supreme Court’s confirmation of the death sentence for Peyman Farahavar.
These rulings, according to the statement, reveal “the ongoing alarming pattern of repression and violence against the people of Iran and its prisoners.”
International Condemnation
The campaign drew attention to remarks by Ms. Mai Sato, UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, who emphasized the widespread violations in Iranian prisons.
The statement again underlined:
“The execution of 46 people in the past week, 190 executions in the month of Shahrivar — unprecedented in the past 35 years — and 871 executions in the first six months of 1404 (since March 21, 2025), paint a horrific picture of the merciless violation of human rights.”
A Call to End Executions in Iran
The “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign reaffirmed its stance:
“We condemn these crimes and call for the immediate halt of executions and an end to this inhumane process. Every act of protest against a death sentence is a step toward halting this cruel practice.”
Supporters worldwide were thanked, with a renewed call for unity and solidarity:
“The machinery of execution can be stopped through unity and solidarity.”
