Iran truck drivers on third day of nationwide strike
The unprecedented nationwide strike launched by Iran’s truck drivers across the country entered its third day on Thursday. Iran Truck drivers are protesting poor living conditions and increasing commissions demanded by authorities. Thousands of truck drivers are refusing to transfer loads or accept new loads, as this movement is already sweeping 93 cities in 25 provinces throughout Iran.

“This wealth is being squandered so that ordinary Iranian citizens are both sending their young men off to fight and die and living lives that aren’t as secure and as wealthy as they could be if Iran would simply change its behavior,” Pompeo, a former House Republican, said.
Rep. Bruce Poliquin, R-Maine, who authored the House legislation, made a similar argument during the debate on the proposal. “Reports have indicated these funds are being used to support and sponsor terrorism around the region and to undermine our own national security interests,” he said in December. “Iran, the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism, cannot be trusted and it’s important for the security of the region and for the United States for these secret funds to be exposed publicly to the world.”
After Kazerun, where will be the next flash point? In December, protests that erupted in the eastern city of Mashhad over unemployment, poverty and government corruption quickly turned into a nationwide protest across Iran. Although the regime brutally cracked down on the protesters, tensions continued to simmer and manifest themselves in smaller yet constant protests in other parts of the country. Last week, the protestsin Kazerun, which had begun about a few months earlier over the government’s plans to divide the city into smaller areas, turned into clashes between the government and people when security forces attacked and killed several of the protesters. As the Kazerun protests showed, the social climate across the entirety of Iran is tense, and chances that uprisings reoccur are very high.

Gharaei Moghaddam, who is a sociologist and professor at Tehran University, emphasised on the lack of happiness in Iran: “To be very frank, Iran’s people are not happy. We must acknowledge the importance of happiness as the basis of life. Even though the people of India are poor, they are still much happier than our people”.
He also commented on the direct impact of employment on ‘social happiness’: “roughly 3.5 million of our young citizens are unemployed, and as a result, are unable to experience happiness. Besides, ‘confidence in future’ is another important factor. We have around 9 million young Iranians who are ready to get married, but don’t have a clear picture of what their future will look like…in saying that, how can they possibly be happy?”
