MEK supporters in the Netherlands condemn death penalty in Iran

MEK supporters rally in the Netherlands condemn death penalty in Iran

On Thursday, October 10, supporters of the main Iranian opposition group, People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI, Mujahedin-e Khalq or MEK), in the Netherlands held a demonstration to commemorate the World Day Against the Death Penalty, in front of the Dutch Parliament and also to commemorate victims of the 1988 massacre of over 30,000 political prisoners in Iran. Most of the victims were MEK supporters. The protesters called for holding the regime and its officials to account for this crime.

MEK supporters in the Netherlands underlined that the Iranian regime has massacred 120,000 people during past 40 years of its rule, including the massacre of 30,000 political prisoners in the summer of 1988.

In the summer of 1988, Ruhollah Khomeini, then-supreme leader of the Iranian regime, issued a Fatwa to massacre thousands of political prisoners, most of them PMOI (MEK) members and supporters. The victims of the massacre were buried secretly in mass graves in unknown locations.

The MEK supporters held banners which read “Free Iran” and “No to execution”.

They organized street displays of Iranian jails and execution. The event included photographs of MEK members executed by Iran’s regime. Family members of the victims of Iran’s regime addressed the protest and called on European leaders to refer the regime’s human rights dossier to the United Nations Security Council.

A second demonstration took place by MEK supporters at the Hofplaats next to the plenary room of the Second Chamber.

The MEK’s headquarters is in Albania. The MEK is a member organization of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), a political coalition based in Paris. The Iranian regime has killed over 120,000 members and supporters of the MEK. The participants protested against the cruel punishments in Iran, particularly towards workers, who were arrested for participating in social protests in Iran.
